Anti-Paranormal Activities Division
The Anti-Paranormal Activities Division of the British Secret Intelligence Service is the agency tasked to countering the efforts of the SS-OIU. It is headed by Colonel Winfield, often referred to as simply “W”. Because of the English peerage of The Baroness, the APA functions almost as an external arm of The Customs Agency under British control. In fact, if she was a he instead of a she, The Baroness would be the official head of the APA. Despite this little wrinkle, The Baroness and Colonel Winfield have functioned well together, and he often serves as a mediator between The Baroness and the more “independent minded” head of the American AOS. Provided the war is won, the Colonel’s future is more likely to lie with the Customs Agency rather than the UK Army. Although nominally a part of the SIS and answerable to C, in practical terms Colonel Winfield and the APA report directly to Prime Minister Churchill & The Baroness.
Unlike its American counterpart, the OSS, which is an official agency whose activities are classified, the very existence of the SIS itself is classified, much less their activities. Among the few high ranking military personnel who know of it, it is referred to by the euphemism MI6 (Short for Military Intelligence Section 6). Unlike MI5 (The Security Service, in charge of counter espionage) this is NOT an official designation as, officially, the SIS does not exist. Among themselves, SIS operatives refer to the organization as Section IV, and when interacting with outsiders, are always covered as being in another part of the service. The APA operates similarly, with not even regular SIS personnel knowing of its existence. They refer to the APA-SIS as section 4A. APA personnel are covered as regular SIS operatives among Section IV regulars, and once again as regular service officers among everyone else, a cover within a cover.
