Arcana
Intellect: 9 + (INT/5)
Cost: 3 Character Points; +1 to Roll per +2 points

Arcana is the professional skill of learned mages. It is can be used to analyze the ebb and flow of magic energies in an area, analyze spells, to discern the abilities of magical creatures based off of their physical aspects and interaction with the background magic of the area, identify the casting school of other mages, and to predict their capabilities based off of that school’s characteristics.

Special: Arcana requires the Mystical Awareness sense. Also, since it deals with the nature of magic and spell casting it is restricted to those with some level of magical abilities.

Knowledge Skill: Arcane
Cost: 2 Character Points for a Roll of 11, or 3 Character Points for an INT-based Roll; +1 to Roll per +1 point

Knowledge Arcane is a skill of magical lore. With a successful Roll a character can identify magical creatures through legends about them, and recollect stories of their capabilities. Through legends and tails they can also make shrewd guesses about of the proper category a mage falls into (sorcerer, artificer, wizard: red, black, green, etc…) Where Arcana can directly analyze magic phenomena, Knowledge Arcane relies on having simply heard about it from somewhere. This is not to say that Knowledge Arcane is not useful or critical. It may take a mage with Arcana hours to puzzle out the function of a spell, ritual, or mystic site they come across, while the lore master with Knowledge Arcane may be able to identify it in seconds from a title or prominent feature. Knowledge Arcane complements Arcana well, and many learned mages posses both.

There is an “everyman” version of Knowledge Arcane. However, since magic and the arcane are generally regarded as superstitious drivel by modern society, the “everyman” version costs 1 Character Point for a set Roll of 8 instead of being free as usual.

Knowledge Skill: Military Intelligence
Cost: 2 Character Points for a Roll of 11, or 3 Character Points for an INT-based Roll, +1 point for each additional applicable military force; +1 to Roll per +1 point

Military Intelligence allows a character to analyze the operational patterns and habits one military organization other than the character’s own and turn them to his advantage. With this skill a character may:

  • Automatically distinguish officers and enlisted of that armed force.
  • With a successful Roll, read the rank insignia & decorations of a member of that armed force.
  • With a successful Roll, equate the ranks of that force to the equivalent rank in the character’s military.
  • With a successful Roll, distinguish between different branches of the service using solely visual, behavioral, or vocal clues.
  • With a successful Roll, recognize patterns in operational habits or behaviors of members in that armed force in order to deduce information regarding the function of individuals, or patterns of operation in their units or organization as a whole.
  • With a successful Roll, analyze intelligence documents and photos pertaining to the chosen armed force.
  • With a successful Roll, collect & organize observed data into a succinct report that is useful and informative to members of that character’s own service.
  • Etc…

Basically, Military Intelligence is for figuring out things which a military does not want outsiders to know.

Since Military Intelligence requires access to restricted information in order to develop and utilize, its full use is restricted to military personnel, members of the French Resistance, and Customs Agents. Civilians may take a 1 Character Point version of this skill at a set Roll of 8 that allows them to read ranks, and to distinguish between different branches of the service by uniform and insignia.

As a 1 point adder, a character may use this skill as a Military Etiquette skill for impersonating general personnel in the chosen army. Note that the character may still need to discover specific information regarding the specific post he is attempting to infiltrate on his own in order to successfully perpetrate the ruse. If Military Intelligence has been purchased for more than one military, then this adder must be purchased for each one to which it is to be applied.

Professional Skill: Military Etiquette
Cost: 2 Character Points for a Roll of 11, or 3 Character Points for an INT-based Roll; +1 to Roll per +1 point

Military Etiquette provides knowledge of the basic functions of the military in which the character serves. With this skill a character may:

  • Automatically read the rank insignia & decorations of any member of his branch of the service. (Army & Army, Navy & Navy, etc…)
  • With a successful Roll: Read the rank insignia & decorations of other service branches & equate them to the correct appropriate rank in his/her branch. (For example, a naval Capitan is the equivalent of an Army Colonel, a full 3 ranks above an army Capitan.)
  • Distinguish between officers and enlisted in other militaries, but may not read their exact rank or equate it, that requires Military Intelligence skill.
  • Know the proper means of interacting with higher ranks. Generally automatic, but may require a Roll in extremely unusual or tense circumstances.
  • Know the acceptable means of dealing with subordinate ranks. Generally automatic, but may require a Roll in extremely unusual or tense circumstances.
  • Be able to interpret Mill Speak (the technical terms and use of language favored by the military in official phraseology.)
  • Etc…

Basically, Military Etiquette is for understanding all of the basic procedural things a military wants its own personnel to know.

In order to take Military Etiquette, a character must be a trained member of the military to which it applies.

Special: The British and American armies are work fairly close together especially in the European Theater. U.S. and British army solders may have their Military Etiquette skill apply to the other allied army for a 1 point adder. This only applies to the allied army, ranks from the other branches, such as the navy, cannot be read or directly equated.

Special: A civilian may take an “everyman” version of this skill with a set Roll of 8, for 1 Character Point which allows them the first 3 listed abilities.
